Evaluation Question 7 - From Preliminary to Official Work

The Preliminary Task brief was to create a minute long scene of a genre of our choice that involved everyone in our group. While filming we had to include a shot-reverse-shot, a match on action and we had to keep in mind the 180 degree rule (which we did).

During the process of producing a full two minute opening sequence we have adapted our use of shot revers shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule. In our shotlist we planned for a shot-reverse-shot between the protagonist and the therapist but decided it didn't work so changed it to a point-of-view shot which we felt expressed the mood a bit more.

In our original cut of the opening sequence we had a match on action of the protagonist walking towards the door then walking through it but we had to cut it due to length issues.

We were also constantly aware of the 360 degree rule but decided to break it with a dolly track around the protagonist so we could get a dizzying shot in the long hallway. We felt breaking the rule made the dream seem more surreal and dreamlike.

Task 7 - Film Synopsis

- A woman (Stacey) goes to therapy to seek help for the recurring dreams they keep having. The dreams revolve around a door they swear they’ve never seen before.

- After their mother passes away the protagonist looks through some old pictures with their father. She finds a picture of her old class in primary school but she doesn’t remember it. The father says that when she was little the family moved to a little town in Kent but they moved out after a month because the school burnt down.

- After talking to their dad Stacey looks back at the pictures with their fiancé who mentions something about  creepy door in the background. The woman now realises that the door is from the old school she decides to go to the town and find out what happened in the school.

- Whilst in the town Stacy investigates the school and ask people what happened but no one gives her a straight answer. She befriends Beth, a woman her age who vaguely remembers Stacey and she helps her look into things. Beth also doesn’t remember much and is curious about what happened.

- After a couple of days of asking people they decide to break into the now abandoned school and the characters experience weird flashbacks as if they’re happening now. But after searching through most of the night they decide to take a break and rest at Beth’s house.

- The next morning Stacey realises that Beth’s dad was one of the people in the flashback. After confronted him it turns out he worked there but Beth doesn’t remember for some reason.

- After talking to Beth’s dad, the duo head back to the school to see if they can find the cupboard but Stacey gets a call from her fiancé in tears saying her dad is in hospital with heart problems. She heads back and find out he may not be getting out of the hospital.

The titles took quite a while to start as we weren't sure which font to use or if we were going to have an effect on them. in the end, we decided we wanted something in the similar font to the American Horror Story logo

Evaluation Question 2 - How our media product represents social groups

First Viewing of Videos

Today we watched each other's opening sequences and gave feedback. For Maisha and me the most part of the feed back was to finish and cut down the time. Our video currently is running at 3 mins 10 seconds and our target is 2 mins. Luckily this isn't a problem as we have several long shorts that can be cut down and there are a few clips that we don't need at all so that will cut off about a minute.

Another problem we have is the sound. The sound levels of the clips don't match at all, in one clip it's very loud and in the next it's extremely quiet. There is also a few clips with interference but the only thing to do about that is to re- record the sound and place it over the video.

Also, we need to add the titles but they're being done separately and will be added later.

Finally, we need to finish the special effects that we've started. The ones that were finished surprised the class (in the good way) so they should be good once they've finished. One of the students said "it has potential to be good, but it just needs to be finished.

Continuity

While filming we had to shoot on seperate days and we came across a major continuity flaw. Nese's top wasred on the first day but grey on the others which I've shown in the pictures below.

At first I was going to scrap the footage and cut the shot out completely, but the scene looks weird without the full shot. Then I thought of films like Pleasantville when they make one object in colour and the rest in black and white and vice versa. I looked online for tutorials of how to do this and followed the video.

All I had to do was add the 3-way colour corrector effect tot he clip and used the dropper tool to select the red and set the saturation to zero. Then I expanded the colour selection until Nese's whole top was grey.

After doing this I realised it was effecting Christie's top and made the room really bright. To stop this I put an Eight-Point Garbage Matte around Nese and overlaid the video on an untouched copy of the video.

Tasks 14/15 - Production Company Ident and Logo

our original idea was to have M-azing as we couldln't think of a name and both of our names begin with m, so we wanted to incorporate the letter m. after this idea, we had realised that it could also work with the letter 'e' as 'e-mazing'. as 'e' is used quite a lot these days
